What needs a different service

  • Ants indoors are almost never fire ants. If you have a trail in the kitchen it is a different species and a different treatment, covered on our ant control page.
  • Carpenter ants nest in wood and cause structural damage. Fire ant work does nothing for them.
  • Stings needing medical attention. Fire ant venom causes a distinctive sterile pustule, and a small number of people react severely. We treat the mounds; anything involving a reaction is a matter for a doctor, not a pest technician.

Fire ants through the North Texas year

Fire ants are a yard problem rather than a house problem, and their visibility is driven almost entirely by soil moisture.

After rain is when mounds appear. The colony pushes soil upward to escape saturated ground, which is why a lawn can look clear on Friday and be dotted with fresh mounds on Monday.

Summer heat drives them deeper and the mounds flatten out, so the colony looks gone when it is not. Treating what you can see at that point misses most of the problem, which is why broadcast bait matters more than mound-by-mound work.

Autumn brings a second active stretch as temperatures drop back into their preferred range. Blackland Prairie clay holds water after storms, which suits them well.

Fire ant control by city

Pest pressure is not the same in every town we serve. These pages cover what is specific to each one — the housing stock, the soil, and what that means for treatment.

Fire Ant Control Questions

Why do the mounds keep coming back?

Because treating a mound individually usually relocates the colony rather than killing it — it moves a few feet and rebuilds. Reducing fire ants across a property means treating the property, not the mounds you can see.

Broadcast treatment or mound treatment?

Broadcast for the property and the season; mound treatment for a specific nest that needs dealing with now, near a door or a play area. Used together and timed properly they work; mound-by-mound alone rarely does.

How dangerous are fire ants?

A sting hurts and leaves a characteristic blister, and a disturbed mound produces many at once. For most people that is painful rather than serious, but for anyone with a sting allergy, and for small children and pets who cannot get away quickly, they are worth taking seriously.
