You might be surprised to learn that scorpions are a type of arachnid and are related to animals like spiders and ticks. There are over 1,300 species of scorpions found worldwide. They are most often thought of as a desert animal, but scorpions can be found in a number of habitats like grasslands, forests, and caves.

Scorpion Identification

Scorpions have a long body, eight legs, and a set of pincers in front. They are probably best known for their five-segmented tail that they like to carry arched over their backs. At the end of the tail is a venomous stinger that causes a lot of fear and trepidation for many people.

The most common species of scorpion in Anna, Texas and the entire United States is the striped bark scorpion (centruroides vittatus). This species averages about 2.5 inches in length and is pale yellow. It can be distinguished by the two dark stripes running down the back and a dark triangular mark on the head above the eyes. Although a sting from a striped bark scorpion can be painful and cause swelling like a bee sting might, it is very rarely deadly. The most dangerous scorpion in the United States, the Arizona bark scorpion (centruroides exilicauda) is closely related, but lives in the Sonoran Desert.

Scorpion Behavior

Scorpions are nocturnal creatures that are not seen much during the day. They eat small animals like insects, spiders, roaches, and centipedes. Larger scorpions may even eat small lizards and mice. Their venomous tails are used to kill prey and for self-defense. During the day, scorpions hide under rocks, wood piles, the bark of trees, and other secluded areas.
